The essentials first
With our medical repatriation service, we organise ground-based return transport home or to a clinic for further treatment – within Switzerland and internationally. The transport is carried out by stretcher or seated, with trained staff accompanying the patient and in an appropriately equipped vehicle.
Typical uses
- Repatriation after illness or an accident abroad
- Transfer to a clinic for further treatment
- Returning home after a hospital stay abroad
- Journeys to treatments in neighbouring countries
- Returning from a holiday with limited mobility
By road instead of an air ambulance
For destinations within Europe, ground-based repatriation is often the more sensible solution: it begins at one bedside and ends at the next, with no transfer at the airport, no waiting times and, as a rule, at a fraction of the cost of an air ambulance.
For patients in a stable condition, it is the more comfortable option – the journey can be interrupted, breaks are possible at any time, and relatives can travel along.
How a repatriation works
Contact us with the patient’s current location, the destination and a brief assessment of their state of health. We check whether ground-based transport is an option and give you the time window and costs.
At the same time, please clarify cost coverage with your insurer. Repatriation from abroad is often covered by travel insurance or supplementary insurance – basic health insurance (KVG) generally does not cover it.
What we do not provide
Our service is intended for patients in a stable physical condition. Intensive care transport, ventilation transport and journeys during which vital functions must be maintained en route are not part of it.
If this is required, we will tell you openly and refer you to the appropriate provider – that is in the patient’s interest.

Frequently asked questions: Medical repatriation & journeys abroad
Does my health insurer pay for repatriation from abroad?
Compulsory basic health insurance (KVG) does not generally cover repatriation from abroad. It is usually covered by travel insurance, supplementary insurance or a rescue membership organisation. Please clarify this before making arrangements.
How far do you travel?
We carry out journeys within Switzerland and to other European countries. Tell us the starting point and destination, and we will check feasibility.
Can relatives travel along?
Yes. One accompanying person travels along; for longer distances, we discuss the seating arrangements in advance.
How quickly can you organise a repatriation?
That depends on the distance, the destination and vehicle availability. Contact us as early as possible on 0800 670 670, and we will give you a realistic time window.

The first IVR-recognised patient transport service in north-western Switzerland
Recognition by the Swiss Interassociation for Rescue Services (IVR/IAS) is not a self-assessment but the result of an external audit of vehicles, equipment, training and procedures. Mobimed was the first patient transport provider in north-western Switzerland to receive it — and still holds it today.
